Kakika Millett opened her second day care center in Wrens and held a ribbon cutting Monday, Feb. 22. Her first center is in Thomson and opened in 2009. Before having that center, she had a group daycare in her home.

“I’ve been doing this for 21 years,” she said. “Dec. 1, 2000, is when I first got my family daycare license. March 10, 2007, I became a group provider; and then on Aug. 24, 2009, I became a daycare center.”

Millett started her career while attending college for nursing and worked in a daycare center.

“I’m licensed for 54 kids; but, for two hours in the afternoon, I’m licensed for 64,” she said of the Wrens center. She is licensed for 47 at her center in Thomson.

Marquita Jackson is her director in Wrens and Sherry Fountain is her Thomson director.

In November of 2011 the Thomson location received NAEYC accreditation. Two years later, in October 2013, she became the first center in McDuffie County to receive Quality Rated, she said. Both accreditations are from the state.

“I have a degree in business; and, I also have a degree in early childhood education. I will be taking training next month to be a coach to help others open daycare centers. I’ve been asked to be a teacher at Miller-Motte Technical College in Augusta. I go to a meeting in March to find out more. This is a new program they will be starting next January. I’ll be on the advisory board for the ECE (early childhood education) program,” she said.

She accepts children from the age of 6 weeks to 12 years.

“On the days they don’t go to school, their parents drop them off. On the days they do go to school, they ride the bus here,” Millett said.

Located at 104 Center Street, Wrens, the center is open from 6:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, contact Millett at 706-547-6820.
